Work on the Bone Witch Collections continues. Last time we talked about formatting and I’m pleased to report that is in final check. I’ve created two print-ready PDFs for these two books and it’s the last chance for me to catch any stray typos.
These stories have already been edited. They’re all out in the world—published as individual shorts. But no matter how many editing passes an author does, no matter how many proof readers look at the files, tiny little things always slip through.
Something new I’m trying with this project is reading the text out loud. This is a method my author friends swear by. Libre Office can tell me if I’ve misspelled something, but it’s not going to catch that I meant along instead of a long. Reading out loud can do that!
But, I thought to myself, if I’m going to bother listening to myself talk, I should probably record this. That can’t be too hard, right? And I know you guys would prefer an author-read version of an audiobook over an AI version.
Well, that turned into a rabbit hole of research, but I’ve come out the other side with a setup I think will work well.
I have two programs running while I record that help smooth out my voice (so you don’t hear the pops and clicks of my mouth moving) and to suppress any ambient noises. I don’t have a sound booth, so if a car door slams outside, these programs make sure that doesn’t get picked up.
Then I record using Audacity, a free audio program that’s robust and quite easy to learn.
Finally, I’m recording with my sony headphones. I do have a nice microphone in storage, bit it’s eluding me, and the headphones work surprisingly well.
Here’s a sample of what I’ve recorded so far…
